Hamanasi Migratory and Native Bird Population

 Figure 1: Plain Chachalaca

Hamanasi has kept and embraced its reputation as an eco-friendly resort in Belize’s Tourism Industry, and in its assurance in sustaining a unique image by preserving the environment and its biodiversity, the company’s rainforest guides have been conducting a migratory and native bird population study for a period of six (6) months. In the facilitation of the study, an onsite birding has been scheduled, and is ongoing for at least once every week, by three (3) inland guides who are Pedro, Lorenzo and Golden. The guides been have conducting the studies around the property from March 21, 2012 to April 4, 2012, and they have recorded 32 species of birds. Most of the bird species were sighted in more than two (2) occasions, in which the sighting frequency was 2.19. Our guests, especially those who are bird lovers, are welcomed to participate in the studies along with our gregarious and enthusiastic inland guides.

“Andrew’s Growing Bud”

Young Andrew Herring upon arrival discovered a bougainvillea plant next to their beachfront room broke a branch, placed in a cup with water and decided that he will let his plant grow.   He kept it in water for its roots to grow as he was determined to ensure that his plant did not die. On his departure we offered him to go and replant in our greenhouse which he was excited to do.

Mr. Desmond, one of our gardeners assisted Andrew in accomplishing his goal.  It was a pleasure to have had Mr. Clarke Herring and family with us and we are all very proud of Andrew, that at his young age he is already thinking how to nurture a living organism.  Our  promise to Andrew is to ensure that his plant gets all the nutrients and water it needs to grow and keep him updated with his plant growth!

“Vets Without Borders from Arkansas, February Clinic”

We continue to have a fantastic 2012 for the animals in Hopkins, Sittee River and nearby villages.   The Carroll County Vets Without Borders from Berryville, Arkansas, returned for their 5th visit to Hopkins! Dr. Tina Cone, Ramona Hambrick and Anita Beeson had a fantastically fun… and incredibly busy… trip to Belize.  Over the course of four days of surgery (including one day when the air conditioning went out), the team was able to complete 18 spays, 17 neuters, a limb amputation, a femoral head ostectomy, dentals, a tumor removal, and entropion (eye surgery), several lacerations and over 80 exams!  Amazing!

Tina, Ramona and Anita also made it by Saturday puppy class to help clean up the park, help hand out dog food (one of our best HBHS programs) and hand a few kids treats they had brought along with them.   Hamanasi contributed once again to the HBHS program with accomodations, lunches and allowed the vets to take some time off from their busy schedule and go on one of our snorkeling trips to the Southern Barrier Reef.

Every time the Carroll County Vet team visits Hopkins, things go well. Old friends are reacquainted, and new ones made.  As always, we look forward to their next visit.

“Bigger and brighter smiles”

Heidi and Chuck Pittman stayed with us at Hamanasi Resort on November 2011, and they took one full day out of their busy adventure schedule to do Dental Hygienic Presentation to all the children from the Holy Family Hopkins School.

Heidi is a Registered Dental Hygienist from beautiful Colorado. Chuck, her husband accompanied and assisted Heidi on her dental presentations, and had the children smiling and expressing positive examples on what they do to keep their teeth healthy and clean.  Each child was given a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss as a motivation to continue to take care of their teeth.

Principal, teachers and smiling children were all very thankful for this generous gesture. We are all very appreciative and welcome to all our guest that want to participate in helping our community especially where the children are concern as they are our future.

“Happy animals, thanks to the HBHS”

In November, the Hopkins Belize Humane Society had free spay/neuter and treatment clinics with vet sisters, Dr. Linda Leavell and Dr. Lisa Kelly. In three days, the two vets performed just over 70 procedures, including spays/neuters, tumor removals, tooth extractions, and other much needed surgeries.  Plus, over 40 exams and treatments. Including house calls done by HBHS representatives, over 130 animals were cared for in the November clinics.

HBHS is a very active organization. Vets from several countries have been to Hopkins to donate their services to Belize. In 2012, HBHS will have their busiest year of free vet clinics ever, hosting several new teams to the area, and many returning to Belize for second, third, and even fourth visits!

Hamanasi is proud to be a big supporter of HBHS! Through donating room and board, tours, jewelry sales, vehicle maintenance, and many other behind the scene assistance, Hamanasi is able to provide support for the people and animals of Hopkins, and surrounding villages. We invite our guests to bring donations for HBHS when you come to visit Hopkins, or make a donation while you are here to directly benefit HBHS.

Hamanasi Tour Guides Explore Mayan Ruins with Archeologist Dr. Jaime Awe

Hamanasi tour guides joined a training opportunity with the Director of the Belize Institute of Archeology, Dr. Jaime Awe.   An evening of classroom studies and a day of in-the-field training with Dr. Awe was filled with new and exciting information about the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech and Xunantunich.  Hamanasi tours both sites twice a week as part of their regularly scheduled Reef & Rainforest Pacakge tours!

Hamanasi Promotes Ongoing Training for Guides

Hamanasi ~ Green Globe Certified

Green Globe Certified Hamanasi Resort, Belize
Launches Tour Guide Training

Utilizing their many years of business experience, the owners of Hamanasi Resort, have developed a range of training and development programs for their staff and related businesses. The newest training program to be conducted will be with tour guides who service the resorts guests.

Hamanasi Resort General Manager, Mr Andrew Usher said, ‘We are pleased to be able to deliver training and workshops for the inland tour guides. Our aim is not only to enhance our guests’ experiences, but also provide a real education.’

‘We will be bringing in archeological experts to provide more in depth information on cultural ancestry and the natural history of our unique tropical location.’

‘In addition we will be focusing on the basic safety issues associated with taking guests into wilderness areas. An intensive rescue and first aid training program will also be offered to all guides.’

Green Globe Certifcation CEO, Mr Guido Bauer said, ‘Hamanasi Resort has a long reputation, of providing quality skills training. From its own service quality programs through to resort management training and now additional tour guide training; these are all substantial investments by Hamanasi delivering professional and trade skills, while adding to the enjoyment and safety for guests.’

Founded in 2000, Hamanasi is one of the few resorts in Belize and possibly the Caribbean that offers both prestigious diving locations and lush jungle for hikes. This boutique resort located on the beach south of Hopkins is nestled between the Maya Mountains and the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Hamanasi runs a full-service dive shop, restaurant, bar and pool. Being a resort with only 21 rooms spread over 20 acres of land and holding a capacity of 60-65 people, these amenities present a challenge to being eco-friendly. But Hamanasi has embraced the challenge and succeeded in becoming Green Globe Certified.

Guests planning to visit Hamanasi Resort in Fall 2010 should also be aware of the ‘Back to School Backpack Project’.  Backpacks and school supplies are donated by Hamanasi guests and visitors throughout the year. Each September, the backpacks and supplies are donated to the schools and families in Sittee River and Hopkins.  For information contact Ms Janet Neel via email: jan@hamanasi.com
