“2nd Annual Hamanasi Back To School Fest In Hopkins”

On Sunday 20th July 2014 Hamanasi’s Green Team held the 2nd Annual Back To School Fest in Hopkins Village. This year we started off by having Ms. Charlotte Garnet very kindly lead all the kids in singing the Belize national anthem to formally open the Fest. Then we had educational talks by special guest speakers.

bird talkMs. Celeshia Guy, Manager of Belize Bird Rescue and Ms. Lauren Whitfield, an intern gave a very informative talk about keeping birds and information about the 9 different parrots that are found in Belize. They made it fun for all and even got audience participation by getting the kids to read out the different types of parrots.

Fest 4 manatee needs your helpThen Mr. Jamal Galves, a Manatee Research Associate at Sea 2 Shore Alliance/Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute spoke about Manatees that are found in the waters in Belize especially around Hopkins and introduced the kids to a prize wheel where if they answered a question correctly about the information they had just been taught they had a chance to spin the wheel to win a whole host of different prizes.

There was then a safety talk by PC Claudious Cardinez regarding curfew times, reminding kids to not just jump in anyone’s car and also that double ride is actually against the law. After talks from our guest speakers we had 2 talks by our very own Green Team members!

CPRFirst off we had a CPR demonstration by our newly qualified Emergency First Response Instructor Mr. Martin Carr who taught the kids what to do if they see an accident and how to do CPR until the emergency medical service arrives.

Then Mr. Juan Tun, Hamanasi’s very own green fingered organic gardener, explained to all the kids and parents that growing plants at home is neither hard nor expensive. You can create simple compost using left over food scraps, garden waste and old seaweed washed up on the beach. Also you don’t need to buy expensive plant pots, simply use the inside of a toilet roll to plant seeds and then when the seed has sprouted you can use the remains of a coconut for the plants to continue to grow.

Great information from all our special guest speakers!

After the speakers Hopkins School Principal Ms. Seferina Castillo handed out the backpacks stuffed to the brim with school supplies for the neediest children in Hopkins Village.

Games 1 gamesIn the afternoon all the kids joined in with many games that were held on the beach to win school supply prizes including, three legged race, running race, marble and spoon race and sack race. For those that weren’t feeling so energetic we had a colouring in table for the kids to complete the activity sheet kindly given to all of them by Belize Bird Rescue. At the end of the day all the kids had a great time and every single attendee went home with lots of school supplies donated by Hamanasi’s very kind guests.Kids back packs

“Green Team Go Fest Crazy!”

Grean team 3The Green Team have had a busy couple of months attending both the Easter Fest in Hopkins in April and the Cacao Fest in Punta Gorda in May.

Both Fests resulted in us having very popular stalls that was busy all day! We had Sustainability Q’s where people could find the answers by reading all the information displayed all around the Green Team booth. Once they gave us the correct answer they had the chance to pick a prize out of our lucky dip. There were water bottles, school supplies, backpacks, t-shirts, and even bottles of champagne to win! We also had a lionfish themed word search for the younger ones.

Along with the chance of winning items, visitors also had the chance of buying some organic produce, as well as plants, that Mr Tun had planted into coconut shells. There was also lionfish patties and lionfish ceviche both of which went down an absolute storm which enables us to spread the word that lionfish is not only edible but very tasty too! Thanks again to Audrey and our fantastic chefs for preparing such great lionfish goodies. For both these Fests we decided to also sell chilled husked coconuts, a great thirst quencher on such a hot day! Needless to say we sold out of those too!! All in all 2 fantastic days of spreading the green word to the community both in and outside Hopkins. Thanks again to all that helped out.

Over 200 kids participated in the ‘Back to School’ Fest!

The Green Team welcomed over 200 students of Hopkins village, parents and teachers to the first ever ‘Back to School’ Fest hosted by the Green Team members of Hamanasi Resort on Saturday August 24, 2013 at the Catholic Church compound.

Joining Mr. Walton Rodriquez and the rest of the Green Team for the opening ceremony was the principal of the Holy Family RC School, Mrs. Seferina Castillo, who kindly agreed to present the backpacks.

The Fest was abuzz with activities, excitement, competitive spirits of the young ones, free snacks and lively music provide by a member of the community.

The purpose of the fest was to donate backpacks filled with an assortment of school supplies and other educational tools to 30 economically disadvantage/less fortunate kids as well as involving other kids in the community to participate in the different fun activities. The Green Team members also took advantage of the event by getting the kids to make easy eco-friendly mosquito traps to be used in homes and creating awareness of recycle, reduce and reuse practices.

Each kid had a chance to win cool prizes of a variety of school supplies which helped students, teachers and parents get prepared for the new school year.

We gave thanks to all our members and contributors that make this event a success!

“Janice and Pete Henderson Contribution to the HBHS”

Publication1

Volunteering at Hopkins Belize Humane Society was the best part of our trip to Hamanasi!   My 15-year-old, Pete, and I helped Dr. Baptist and Joseph during one of the monthly spay/neuter clinics.   We helped prep the dogs for surgery, wash surgical instruments, and organize supplies.  Our favorite part was returning the dogs to their families in Hopkins and San Ramon the next day.   The village children swarmed our truck when we drove up.  It was fun to hand out the dog food, leashes and collars along with their pet.   The children (and adults) were eager for information on how to take care of their pet and it was rewarding to teach them how to be good owners.     Because of HBHS, getting your dog spayed/neutered is becoming the cultural norm.  As we drove by, families would stop us to ask us to take their dog for surgery (“Next time!!  We’ll be back!!”)  It was a remarkable experience!

“Lopez Donation To Mrs. Bertie Hopkins Community Library”

Miss Bertie’s Hopkins Community Library was established in 2008 by U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Bertie Lee Murphy. She became a Peace Corps Volunteer in June 2007, following a distinguished career in both the corporate world and in public service. Bertie was a vivacious and dedicated member of the Peace Corps family and served with distinction as an Education Volunteer in Belize, where she was an elementary education teacher-trainer in the southern village of Hopkins. Universally loved and respected, Bertie had recently repurposed a local building into a library filled with personal and donated books.

Donald Lopez an American citizen from California has been diving with Hopkins Divers for the past seven years and calls Hopkins his second home.  Every year Lopez donates to the community and this year was no exception.  He brought with him a custom built single speed bicycle, this was his only mode of transport for the few months that he stayed in Hopkins – he generously auctioned it off and all proceeds went to Mrs. Bertie Library.  It was a good turnout and BZ$205  was the final offer by Pam owner of Windschief.

Thanks to everyone that enthusiastically and generously participated and congrats to Pam on her new bike!O
