“Hopkin’s Day 2012″

This weekend in Hopkins is a festive and fun place to be. The intense beating of drums followed by singing and dancing will welcome you as you enter the sleepy fishing village of Hopkins. It makes the 71st year of the arrival of the Garifuna to Hopkins, and Hopkins Day has been celebrated since 1990. It is a festival that grows every year. and aside from the villages more and more Belizean people from other parts of the country are coming to be a part of this cultural festival.

There will be lots of fun games and drumming entertainment with a variety of cultural and Belizean food for everyone during the day. Saturday night will come alive with the Punta fest where many bands from around the country will be participating.

“Generous Donation For The School Children”

We would like to thank Marie and Lee from Cherry Hill New Jersey for their generous time spend in collecting monetary and school supplies donations for the school children of Hopkins and Sittee River Village. Marie and Lee visited Hamanasi on March, 2012 and shared with the children a very cheerful afternoon.. Over 25 school bags with school supplies with given out to the young kids from the Holy Family Hopkins School and Ms. Bertie Hopkins Library. 

Lee and Marie then travelled to Sittee River Methodist School were a vast amount of school supplies include, stick glue, crayons, pencils. etc were donated. Preparing our children for a better future and helping them develop and become professionals is our main priority.

 

Vice Principal Fritz Coleman along with Des the librarian appreciated the visit of our guest and the valuable support provided to the school children.

 

“May Green Newsletter – Lionfish Hunt”

Hamanasi Resort believes and practices environmental sustainability, and in its ecofriendly quest, it has empowered and motivated its Dive crew to participate in the reduction of lionfish population through its spear fishing adventures. They saw a desperate need to minimize the numbers of Lionfish that poses a serious threat to our reef. This is a means of eliminating the rapid increase in the numbers of lionfish spotted along the entire coast of Belize and around the world; therefore, the Hamanasi Dive crew aims to double their lion fish hunt to 4 trips weekly for the month of March. Martin Carr, the Green team ambassador for the department records their daily catch.

From data gathered, marine guides and guests are doing a great job in their lionfish spearing efforts. In total the guides have speared over 200 Lionfish since February. Sam Noralez speared the most Lion fish followed by Martin Carr. We acknowledge Mr. Espinosa, Elvis, John, Roy and Terrill for their hard work and consistency in increasing the number of catches. Thanks to our guests for participating in this adventure.

After guests have completed this adventure for the day, they can have their catch sent to the main Kitchen so that Chef Sheridan Polanco prepares delicious Lion fish cuisines for lunch or dinner.

The Dive crew and Hamanasi Green Team Steering Committee (HGTSC) are doing their best to sustain this adventure by organizing hunts and providing guests with the relevant information about the danger that these invasive species of lionfish post to our reef. If anyone is interested in Lionfish hunting with our dynamic dive crew call or sign up at front desk, and they will willingly assist in every means possible to arrange a Lionfish Adventure that suits your needs.

Hamanasi Migratory and Native Bird Population

Hamanasi has kept and embraced its reputation as an eco-friendly resort in Belize’s Tourism Industry, and in its assurance in sustaining a unique image by preserving the environment and its biodiversity, the company’s rainforest guides have been conducting a migratory and native bird population study for a period of six (6) months. In the facilitation of the study, an onsite birding has been scheduled, and is ongoing for at least once every week, by three (3) inland guides who are Pedro, Lorenzo and Golden. The guides been have conducting the studies around the property from March 21, 2012 to April 4, 2012, and they have recorded 32 species of birds. Most of the bird species were sighted in more than two (2) occasions, in which the sighting frequency was 2.19. Our guests, especially those who are bird lovers, are welcomed to participate in the studies along with our gregarious and enthusiastic inland guides.

 

“Andrew’s Growing Bud”

Young Andrew Herring upon arrival discovered a bougainvillea plant next to their beachfront room broke a branch, placed in a cup with water and decided that he will let his plant grow.   He kept it in water for its roots to grow as he was determined to ensure that his plant did not die. On his departure we offered him to go and replant in our greenhouse which he was excited to do.

Mr. Desmond, one of our gardeners assisted Andrew in accomplishing his goal.  It was a pleasure to have had Mr. Clarke Herring and family with us and we are all very proud of Andrew, that at his young age he is already thinking how to nurture a living organism.  Our  promise to Andrew is to ensure that his plant gets all the nutrients and water it needs to grow and keep him updated with his plant growth!

Our Organic Garden and Current Production

What is an organic garden?  An area where plants are produced by obeying the laws of nature — Industrial pesticide and fertilizer use is disallowed in our garden – Naturally produced fertilizers such as ash, compost, manure and organically produced pesticides and herbicides are encouraged – Integrated pest management systems (IMPS) practices are applied to prevent and combat pests and diseases. 

What are we producing?  A small scale fruit and vegetable productions is now at full swing in our newly established organic garden.  Healthier fruits, vegetables and herbs are now available for guests and staff in the restaurant and staff kitchen.  Watermelon, cantaloupe, pine apple, papaya, carrots, passion fruit, green onions, peppermint and basil, just to name a few, are now in production.

“Royal visit to Belize”

Prince Harry is expected to arrive in Belize on Friday, March 2nd, 2012 as a part of the celebration to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s II Diamond Jubilee. The Prince will be visiting Belmopan and San Ignacio during his whirlwind visit to Belize for which the Belize Tourism Board in collaboration with the Government of Belize has organized a packed schedule of activities for him to maximize his visit to the country.

Hopkins was chosen as the destination to represent the Garifuna Booth in the street festival welcoming Prince Harry to Belize. Chef Bernard from Jaguar Reef Lodge along with our very own Chef Sheridan and Chef Marcia were chosen to prepare and serve Prince Harry and all invited guests with our traditional delectable Garifuna dishes. Along with the Garifuna booth, there will be a Creole and Mestizo Booth.

It is being said that the Prince wants to dance to the Punta music and drink our Beliken beer. There will be professional cultural dancers and entertainment for this event.

We are all super excited and even more incredibly honored for this once in a lifetime opportunity and we want to welcome Prince Harry to Belize!

 

“Bigger and brighter smiles”

Heidi and Chuck Pittman stayed with us at Hamanasi Resort on November 2011, and they took one full day out of their busy adventure schedule to do Dental Hygienic Presentation to all the children from the Holy Family Hopkins School.

Heidi is a Registered Dental Hygienist from beautiful Colorado. Chuck, her husband accompanied and assisted Heidi on her dental presentations, and had the children smiling and expressing positive examples on what they do to keep their teeth healthy and clean.  Each child was given a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss as a motivation to continue to take care of their teeth.

    

 

 

Principal, teachers and smiling children were all very thankful for this generous gesture. We are all very appreciative and welcome to all our guest that want to participate in helping our community especially where the children are concern as they are our future.

 

“2011 Christmas Eve Cookie Buffet”

The traditional Hamanasi Cookie Buffet was a slam with guest sating their sweet pallets with the popular Ginger Bread Men, Almond Bars, Peanut Butter Blossoms, Pineapple Filled Cut-outs, Sugar Cookies, Lime Drop Cookies, Chocolate Chews and last but not least our Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies.   To quench their thirst we had Shiraz Punch and the not to be forgotten our Hamanasi Eggnog.
