“Garifuna Cooking Class”

Garifuna Cooking Class

Our Garifuna Culture has been proclaimed as an intangible heritage of humanity! Join us as we introduce to you the full Garifuna cultural experience from dressing in a Garifuna traditional outfit to exploring the foods through this cooking lesson.

Hudut is the popular Garifuna dish which you will learn to cook from scratch.  It is comprised of green and ripe mashed plantains called “Fu Fu” and a coconut fish stew.

While the food is cooking you will tour a Garifuna Gallery and your host will explain and describe some of the Garinagu artifacts that have been collected throughout these years.

In addition to the Garifuna culinary wonders, enjoy the pulsating rhythm of the Garifuna Drums.  Be one with Belize while learning how to drum, dance and sing with friendly & professional indigenous people.  drumming

This tour will introduce you to the culture, history and traditions of this unique Garifuna fishing village.

“From our Organic Garden”

organic gardenPresently we are harvesting an abundance of baby pumpkin, hot peppers, spinach, cilantro, dill, lettuce, basil, sugarcane in our organic garden.  Soon to come will be sweetcorn, beans, squash.  We are starting to use diatomaceous earth (DE) as an organic pesticide.  It’s completely organic, natural and safe for animals and humans.  It will only target small pest insects such as the fire ants and sandflies that we tend to get an abundance of around that garden area.

We invite all our guest to visit our organic garden when staying with us!

“Community Love”

pic1This last year as been an amazing year for Hamanasi, we have met many new people and made many new friends. We have grown as a company and as a family, with a few new faces joining our wonderful team.

Hamanasi is built on our love for the beautiful environment that surrounds us, and we passionately try to be as sustainable as possible every day. Many of our guests will come to visit us with an understanding of the importance of preserving our natural environment, but they also come with an understanding that without our community, we would not exist. Each year we support the continued education of the children from Hopkins, but also from the surrounding communities of Silk Grass, Sittee River and Maya Center. Our education fund helps to provide financial assistance for families for schooling, but the generous donations of school supplies, crayons, pens, pencils, writing books, arts supplies, backpacks, means that the children can go to school with all the things they will need to start the school year right.

We have also supported the continued efforts of the Hopkins Belize Humane Society for many years, and will continue for many into the future. The clinics, supported by volunteer veterinarians both local and international has provided the communities of Stann Creek with free spay and neuter clinics as well as low cost clinics for other surgeries. The HBHS work tirelessly within the community providing education for people with pets on how best to care for them, with very few resources. This is why the donations that we receive from guests such as leashes and collars, flea treatments, pet treats, toys, all items that seem so small, mean so much to our communities.

Throughout the year we have been able to give out these donations to the HBHS, and to the children, especially at events such as the Kite Fest, the Easter Fest and the Hopkins Day Fest. Our big end of year celebration was to take over 100 backpacks, each over flowing with school supplies, to the schools to be able to help the children of less fortunate families.

pic3Our donations this year totaled just over 510lbs, which is nearly 100lbs more than last year, and this is all because of the generosity of our guests. We cannot thank everyone enough for what they have given to Hopkins and the surrounding communities.

“2015 Kite Festival”

IMG_1735On the 7th March 2015, the sun was shining and the wind was blowing just the perfect amount for the 11th annual Hopkins Kite Fest. Over 100 children from Hopkins village came out to spend the day at the beach, making and flying kites. The all-day event allowed the children to take part in kite making and decorating workshops, getting to practice flying their kites, and tweaking them ever so if needed, before the final event started. The climax of the day was the kite flying competition, where prizes were given out for the best kite, the highest flying kite and many other categories. Prizes had been so wonderfully donated by business in and around Hopkins, including Hamanasi. It was a fantastic day, and we cannot wait until next year!  Thanks to the Hamanasi #Greenteam for all the help.

silkThe children at Sittee River School very kindly sung for us and showed us their craft projects that use all recycled materials so a great project that fits perfectly into what the Green Team do! Maybe we have a few future Green Team members currently at Sittee River School!

Hamanasi would like to thank our very generous guests for donating some many backpacks and school supplies, we could not keep having these Back To School Fests without all of you. Thank you again.

“2nd Annual Hamanasi Back To School Fest In Hopkins”

On Sunday 20th July 2014 Hamanasi’s Green Team held the 2nd Annual Back To School Fest in Hopkins Village. This year we started off by having Ms. Charlotte Garnet very kindly lead all the kids in singing the Belize national anthem to formally open the Fest. Then we had educational talks by special guest speakers.

bird talkMs. Celeshia Guy, Manager of Belize Bird Rescue and Ms. Lauren Whitfield, an intern gave a very informative talk about keeping birds and information about the 9 different parrots that are found in Belize. They made it fun for all and even got audience participation by getting the kids to read out the different types of parrots.

Fest 4 manatee needs your helpThen Mr. Jamal Galves, a Manatee Research Associate at Sea 2 Shore Alliance/Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute spoke about Manatees that are found in the waters in Belize especially around Hopkins and introduced the kids to a prize wheel where if they answered a question correctly about the information they had just been taught they had a chance to spin the wheel to win a whole host of different prizes.

There was then a safety talk by PC Claudious Cardinez regarding curfew times, reminding kids to not just jump in anyone’s car and also that double ride is actually against the law. After talks from our guest speakers we had 2 talks by our very own Green Team members!

CPRFirst off we had a CPR demonstration by our newly qualified Emergency First Response Instructor Mr. Martin Carr who taught the kids what to do if they see an accident and how to do CPR until the emergency medical service arrives.

Then Mr. Juan Tun, Hamanasi’s very own green fingered organic gardener, explained to all the kids and parents that growing plants at home is neither hard nor expensive. You can create simple compost using left over food scraps, garden waste and old seaweed washed up on the beach. Also you don’t need to buy expensive plant pots, simply use the inside of a toilet roll to plant seeds and then when the seed has sprouted you can use the remains of a coconut for the plants to continue to grow.

Great information from all our special guest speakers!

After the speakers Hopkins School Principal Ms. Seferina Castillo handed out the backpacks stuffed to the brim with school supplies for the neediest children in Hopkins Village.

Games 1 gamesIn the afternoon all the kids joined in with many games that were held on the beach to win school supply prizes including, three legged race, running race, marble and spoon race and sack race. For those that weren’t feeling so energetic we had a colouring in table for the kids to complete the activity sheet kindly given to all of them by Belize Bird Rescue. At the end of the day all the kids had a great time and every single attendee went home with lots of school supplies donated by Hamanasi’s very kind guests.Kids back packs
