Since its beginnings Hamanasi has been committed to sustainable tourism. Hamanasi was the first beachfront hotel in Belize to be certified by Green Globe. It is also certified by Sustainable Travel International with the STEP program. Hamanasi has received many awards and recognition including the CAST/Travel Mole Sustainable Hotel award, Belize Hotel of the Year, yearly TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards, Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List, Green Globe Sustainable Leader award and more. Coexistence in harmony with the surrounding flora and fauna is deliberate. When Hamanasi added rooms instead of cutting down trees, we built treehouses, protecting our littoral forest — one of the most threatened types of forests due to coastal development. On property guests may enjoy lush gardens, 900 feet of beachfront, a freshwater swimming pool and an 11-acre nature preserve. At the center of the resort is the Great House, which was designed to utilize natural light as much as possible. Clerestory windows, open glass walls and two 10-foot Big Ass Fans allow for natural ventilation. Appliances are Energy Star rated. Throughout the resort, eco-friendly cleaning products and processes are used.
But what about people? Hamanasi shines because of our highly trained, super friendly, excellent employees, most of whom are from surrounding villages. (We like our staff, can’t you tell? J) We also support various initiatives including the Hopkins Belize Humane Society, Backpack to School Project, Internship Program, Hamanasi Education Fund, Hopkins Health Clinic and the Pan American Development Fund partnership. Our Green Team is active in the community at festivals and with the Hopkins Eco Club, as well as with our guests during the weekly Green Hour in the bar.
