At Hamanasi, we believe that actively supporting our community and nurturing the future go hand in hand. One incredibly inspiring example of this right here in Hopkins Village adjacent to the primary school is the Miss Bertie Hopkins Community Library.

This beloved non-profit library has been serving the Hopkins community since 2007. Founded by Peace Corps volunteer Bertie Lee Murphy, the library has become a vibrant space for learning, creativity, and connection. Although Miss Bertie passed away in 2008, and the library temporarily closed, the community came together to successfully reopen its doors in October 2011. Today, it continues to flourish with more than 13,000 books for readers of all ages!

While most of the library’s visitors are children under 12, the space offers so much more than books. From arts and crafts to educational activities, it provides young minds with safe, vital opportunities to learn, grow, and dream big.

How You Can Help: Through our Pack for a Purpose program, guests visiting Hamanasi are invited to help support the library by packing and donating new or gently used books for children, teens, and adults, as well as school supplies. Every single donation helps expand access to reading and learning opportunities within the Hopkins community, making a lasting impact on local families.

Together, we can continue helping stories, education, and opportunity thrive in Belize!
