Miss Bertie’s Library: A Community Treasure

IMG_4418

Founded in 2007 by Peace Corps volunteer Bertie Lee Murphy, Miss Bertie’s Hopkins Community Library has become a vital resource in the Hopkins area. Though it briefly closed after Miss Bertie’s passing in 2008, the library re-opened in October 2011 and now proudly houses over 13,000 books, serving mostly young readers under 12.  More than just books, the library offers arts, crafts, and educational activities, nurturing young minds in a safe, creative space.

Recently, Hamanasi’s maintenance team lent a helping hand by installing a new library sign made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and caps! The design came from the talented students of Hopkins Primary School, showing how sustainability and creativity can transform a community.  So when you come to Hamanasi bring some books to donate to the library.  Visiting Hopkins?  Stop by the library, check out the sign and see how you can support its ongoing growth!
