On World Environment Day, the Hamanasi Green Team embarked on a vital mission to protect one of Belize’s most treasured marine ecosystems — the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. With a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, the team conducted a beach clean-up that resulted in the removal of 43.5 kilograms of plastic waste from South Water Caye.
The South Water Caye Marine Reserve, one of the largest marine protected areas in Belize, is a haven for vibrant coral reefs, endangered marine species, and a source of livelihood for local communities. Unfortunately, like many marine ecosystems worldwide, it faces mounting pressure from plastic pollution — a threat to marine life, coral health, and the overall balance of the ocean.
Armed with an unshakable dedication to the planet, the Hamanasi Green Team worked tirelessly to remove fishing lines, plastic bottles, and other debris threatening marine life. The team scoured the beach and searched around mangroves’ roots collecting discarded packaging, microplastics, and other non-biodegradable materials.
“This effort is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to regenerative tourism and environmental responsibility,” said Areli Perez, Hamanasi’s Regenerative Ambassador. “World Environment Day is a powerful reminder that protecting our reefs is not just a one-day effort — it’s a daily responsibility.”
The plastic collected is but a small percentage of the plastic waste choking our oceans, underscoring the urgent need for continued action. Our action represents progress — not only in terms of waste removed, but also in raising awareness and inspiring others to take part in preserving Belize’s marine heritage.
