Whale Shark Diving Policies
There are strict regulations in the whale shark area to which all operators must adhere. The whale shark dives are blue water dives for experienced divers only. All divers are required to do a checkout dive on the barrier reef with Hamanasi prior to venturing out to the whale shark area.
This checkout dive allows divers to fine-tune their weighting and allows our staff to assess diver skills and ability for their safety at the Gladden Spit whale shark area. A minimum number of 8 divers is required to go out to Gladden Spit, and the legal maximum number of divers for these trips is 12 divers per boat.
All divers will be required to attend a short whale shark training meeting at which they must complete and sign Hamanasi’s Whale Shark Liability Release before doing Whale Shark dives.
Respect for Nature
Never chase an animal – while hiking, diving or snorkeling. Guests are expected to stay on trails and not take souvenirs from nature or archeological sites. Respect our reef and her inhabitants. Touch only water! Take only pictures! Leave only your wake! No divers or snorkelers are permitted to touch or take anything from the sea. No exceptions. Individuals who cause negative environmental damage during dive or snorkel trips may be banned from diving or snorkeling in Belize in accordance with Belize regulations.
