Ancient Maya City of Tikal

Deep in the rainforest lies one of the most spectacular of all Maya sites in Mesoamerica. Tikal is in the Peten department of Guatemala, about 1.5 hours from Belize’s western border. Located within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the flora and fauna in this area is almost as breathtaking as the Maya temples themselves.

The original city of Tikal covered an area of 35 square miles.  Although archaeologists have been excavating the site since the 1930’s, there is at least another 100 years of work to be done.  On this trip you will visit many of the temples at the site, learn fascinating Maya history and immerse yourself in a spectacular jungle setting teeming with wildlife.  Note: given the distance, this long tour involves a lot of time in a van.
