Meet Khadija Assales, affectionately known as Kaj. She is the creative force and proud owner and designer behind the beloved jewelry brand, Kaj Expressions. What started as a passion project in her small kitchen has blossomed into one of Belize’s most recognized and celebrated jewelry brands.
With over thirteen years of dedication to her craft, Kaj made her mark through pieces that are not only fashion-forward but also sustainable. Most notably, she is the original creator of lionfish jewelry in Belize and the entire Caribbean. After lionfish are caught and filleted for the table, she uses their fins in her designs. Her stunning and meaningful collection raises awareness about invasive lionfish, while turning them into wearable art. Fun fact: In 2024, Kaj was nominated as Oceana’s “Ocean Hero 2024.”
