Drop into the Black Hole

Feature

Looking to add a serious dose of adventure to your stay at Hamanasi? Meet the legendary Black Hole Drop at Actun Loch Tunich: an epic expedition that is as thrilling as it is unforgettable. The journey begins with a vigorous 1.5-mile hike along a steep trail into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. Then comes the moment that takes your breath away: peering over the edge of a massive sinkhole, perched 300 feet above the basin below and 200 feet above the rainforest canopy growing within it.

Peering over the edge before the rappel.

With fully trained caving guides expertly rigging the ropes, you’ll rappel a short wall into the heart of the sinkhole. The first 10 feet deliver an instant adrenaline rush, followed by 200 feet of jaw-dropping views. Feel free to take your time – and photos – as this is an I-can’t-believe-I’m-doing-this sight. The final 100 feet lowers you gently through the rainforest canopy to the basin floor, where you’ll explore inside the sinkhole before trekking back out.
