At Hamanasi, protecting the environment is more than a promise; it’s a practice! Guided by our green purchasing policy, we’ve long prioritized eco-friendly alternatives, from plastic-free packaging to organic products. One shining example? Our bamboo straws.
These stylish, sustainable straws were born right here at Hamanasi, thanks to former team member Mark Jacobs. Inspired by a guest’s suggestion, Hamanasi brought in bamboo straws to replace plastic ones. Then bartender Mark began crafting reusable straws from fast-growing Foxtail bamboo right here in Belize. Hamanasi used its last plastic straw in 2016, joining a movement called The Last Plastic Straw.
Bamboo straws are a sustainable alternative to plastic straws, which pollute our land and sea. Many sea creatures, like turtles, mistake plastic in the water for food. The accumulation of ingested plastic can cause them to die. During your stay, as you enjoy a refreshing drink with a bamboo straw, know that you are also protecting our land and waters from plastic waste. And if you love the straws as much as we do, take home a set from our gift shop. It’s a small souvenir with a big impact.
