Ancient & Living Maya Culture

Immerse yourself into the lifestyle of the Maya, both ancient and living, in the south of Belize.

Just an hour and 45 minutes from Hamanasi you'll visit the archaeological site of Nim Li Punit. This medium sized Maya site from the Classic Period earned its name from a carving on the site’s longest stela depicting an ancient king wearing a large headdress. In the Maya Kekchi language, Nim Li Punit means “the big hat”. Learn its history through 26 well preserved carved stone stellae. Explore a ballcourt, the royal living quarters and three tombs, plus view many artifacts discovered at the site. Then head to the village of Big Falls for an interactive experience with a Maya family, where you'll see first hand how Maya traditions and handicrafts are practiced to this day in southern Belize.

You'll visit a rural family where you'll help prepare a customary Maya meal for your lunch and learn some of the traditions surrounding food, medicinal plants, musical instruments and storytelling.  This is a cultural immersion you won't want to miss!

Nearby are the unexcavated remains of the ancient Mayan city of Mayflower. Archaeologists are still unearthing and piecing together the history of this modest Mayan ruin, which is overgrown by the jungle. Orchids, birds and lush vegetation abound!  This hike is physically challenging!
